Sorrell Land Surveying, Washington, North Carolina, has been serving the citizens and communities of Eastern North Carolina and their surveying needs with over 40 years of combined experience.



Personnel

Hugh A. Sorrell, PLS L-2849

31 years North Carolina state service (24 years with North Carolina Department of Transportation and seven years with North Carolina Department of Geodetic Survey).  Supervisor of the Williamston, NC Regional Office.  NCDOT service included:

  • surveys for new highway construction for 13 counties in Eastern North Carolina
  • condemnation surveys for the North Carolina Attorney General
  • route surveys
  • hydrographic surveys
  • photogrammetric surveys
  • underwater soundings
  • property elevations
  • digital terrain models (DTM)


  • In 2006 Hugh started a small business in Washington, NC, offering surveying services in partnership with his son, Stuart Sorrell. Counties include (but are not limited to): Beaufort, Craven, Hyde, Martin, Pamlico, Pitt, Tyrrell, and Washington.   Hugh's educational background is Wilson Technical Community College (now Wilson Community College) in Wilson, NC, and East Carolina University, Greenville, NC.

    Stuart Sorrell

    Co-owner of Sorrell Land Surveying.  Stuart began his surveying career in the family business with his father Hugh.  He studied at Wake Technical Community College, Raleigh, NC, and received his surveying technical degree as a Survey Technician.  In college he worked at NCDOT and McKim & Creed out of Raleigh, NC.  He rejoined the family business in 2010.  Stuart supervises all field work and is working toward his registration as a surveyor in North Carolina.

     


    Nick Barnes

    Originally from Salisbury, NC, Nick moved to the Outer Banks where he completed his Associate degree at the College of the Albermarle in Manteo, NC.  He also studied at East Carolina University, Greenville, NC.  He is currently studying Geomatics at North Carolina A&T in Greensboro, NC. With a lifelong interest in history, cartography, and the outdoors, Nick determined surveying a good field and career choice.  He enjoys surfing, fishing, military history, and spending time with family and friends.






    Stuart Sorrell
    Ryasm Hurley

    Rysam is the newest member of our team.  He is originally from Laingsburg, Michigan and recently completed his contract with the Department of the Army as a paratrooper with both the 173rd Airborne in Vicenza, Italy, and the 82nd Airborne in Fayetteville, North Carolina.  He has studied at St. Clair County Community College in Port Huron, Michigan, and Pitt County Community College in Greenville, North Carolina.
